HOW TO SUCCEED A VIRTUAL INTERVIEW

As our work reality has permanently changed with more hybrid conditions and the mainstay of teleworking, virtual interviews will continue to be used for recruiting or pre-screening potential candidates.

1. DIGITAL HANDSHAKE
The physical handshake with the interviewer is important. Start the virtual interview with a good eye contact and present yourself with a positive greeting of acknowledgement.

2. NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION
According to research from Albert Mehrabian, Professor Emeritus and the University of California, he established the 7%/38%/55% rule of communication.

• 7% verbal communication
•38% tone of voice
•55% nonverbal communication

Nonverbal communication must therefore correspond to what you are saying. Pay attention to your posture, the placement of your arms and hands.

3. ACTIVE LISTENING
Do not hesitate to clarify the questions and comments if they are not clear. Let the interviewer complete his/her question before answering it.

4. MINIMISE DISTRACTIONS
Choose a sound proof and private space and notify the people who share the same space that you are in interview.
Accept that there can be unforeseen interruptions on both sides and adapt quickly to the situation.

5. COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS
Speak clearly and naturally. Control the rhythm and manage your emotions amidst your nervousness and speak in a confident and articulate manner.

6. CONNECT WITH THE INTERVIEWER
Optimize direct eye contact with the interviewer. Be attentive and exchange commonalities but be careful not to be overly familiar with the interviewer. You are not doing a Facetime with a friend!

7. RESEARCH AND PREPARE THE INTERVIEW
Thoroughly prepare the interview as you would an in-person one. Research the company, carefully read the job description and identify the skill sets that are required.
Avoid overly prepared and methodical answers, remain natural and pertinent.

8. DRESS CODE
Opt for a more formal than casual look. Even if your interviewer is dressed informally, this remains a job interview and not a zoom happy hour!

9. TEST TECHNOLOGY AND LIGHTING
Not to be overlooked, be confident that both your technology and lighting are optimal. Do not hesitate to validate the quality of the sound and proper lighting with your interviewer.
Place yourself neither too close nor too far from the camera and show your shoulders.
10.POST-INTERVIEW FOLLOW-UP
Be courteous while demonstrating interest and send a brief thank you message 24 hours after the interview.
